I think everyone who has experienced a boil at some point in their life would agree that boils on the buttocks is one of the worst places to have a boil.  They can be a downright pain in the butt.

It can make it annoyingly painful to sit, especially when doing things that require sitting such as driving, sitting at work or in class, or even laying down in bed.  There’s just nothing fun about having a boil on your buttocks.  Fortunately, there’s ways to cope, and even treat your boil so that you can speed up the healing process and find relief fast.

What Causes Boils on Buttocks?

There are different ways you can acquire a boil on your butt.  In most cases, it’s likely that bacteria on your skin, known as staphylococcal, entered through a hair follicle or tiny break and infected the area.

It’s not uncommon for this type of bacteria to be found on your own skin, but it’s also possible to get it from someone else.  It could have been on your hands that came in contact with your buttocks, or possibly you sat on a public toilet seat that contained the bacteria.  There’s no way to know for sure, but knowing possible causes can also help with prevention (which I’ll talk about a little later.)

How to Get Rid of a Boil On Your Butt:

Treating a boil on your butt can be a little tricky, given its placement.  However, the treatment is similar to almost any other boil.   

You must first get the boil to open on its own so that it can begin to drain naturally.  To do this,…

1.) Place a warm, wet washcloth over the boil and leave it on there for roughly 20 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day.  (You may find it easier to do this while laying on your stomach.) 

The heat from the warm compress such as this helps increase the antibody-carrying blood supply; thus, assisting the pus and infection to come to a head quicker.  Keep doing this until the boil pops and starts to drain, and then for a couple days after.

Remember that you must NEVER squeeze, scratch, or try to pop the boil with force.  Doing this is likely to lead to more infection and cause you more pain.  The bacteria from the pus can easily spread to other parts of your buttocks, which is the last thing you want.

2.) Keep the infected area clean and bandaged.  This means using a natural, antibacterial soap to wash the area at least twice a day, and using a new bandage each time.  Be sure to wash your hands each time you finish, since the bacteria can easily spread to other parts of your body, or even other people.

Home Remedies for Boils on Buttocks

1.) Tea Tree Oil

  • Tea Tree Oil contains strong antibacterial and antiseptic properties, which are great for treating bacterial skin ailments.  Be sure to dilute the tea tree oil with coconut or olive oil before putting it on the skin, since putting it directly on the skin with no dilution could cause a burning sensation.

2.) Turmeric Powder

  • Turmeric contains antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which are both very beneficial in helping a boil heal.  Turmeric has been used in Eastern medicine.  You can either ingest it orally by mixing the turmeric powder with water or milk, and drinking it several times a day; or you can use it as a topical ointment by mixing it with water or ginger to get a paste consistency.

3.) Neem Oil

  • Neem oil is used by many for all kinds of skin ailments, as it also contains antiseptic and antibacterial properties.  Apply it directly to the boil 3 to 4 times a day.

4.) Castor Oil

  • Castor oil has a chemical compound known as ricinoleic acid, which is a natural, but powerful anti-inflammatory.  Its antibacterial properties provide immense healing power for boils.

5.) Epsom Salt

  • Epsom Salt is used as a healing agent for many different types of skin ailments, including boils.  You can either take warm, Espom Salt bath in a full bathtub, or a partial “sitz” bath where you only soak only your bottom (a full bath will be more relaxing).  The salts not only provide healing properties to the boil, but they will help to dry out the pus, helping the boil to drain.

How to Prevent Boils on Your Buttocks

1.) Use a strong antibacterial soap.  Some people find that Hibiclens works very well to keep their boils from coming back.  Hibiclens is a skin cleanser and antiseptic that’s recommended a lot of times after someone has a surgery to keep bacteria away from the healing area.

2.) Pay attention to what you eat. Quite a few people I know that have suffered from boils would keep a food journal to keep track of what they ate whenever they would get infections.  Some of those foods included coconuts, peanuts, almonds, cashews, peanut butter, or oils made from those foods.  It may not be the same for you, but pay attention to what foods may be contributing to your boils.

3.) Don’t share towels or sheets.  Be sure you are only using your own towel, and it isn’t resting too close to someone else’s before you use it.  You should also follow the same rule for sheets.  Only sleep on your side of the bed and avoid getting into a bed that someone else has slept in.  This will help keep you from coming into possible contamination if someone else is a carrier of the bacteria.

4.) Don’t share razors.  Shaving your body or your face with someone else’s razor is a good way to get a boil.  Razors leave micro-cuts which are an open invitation for bacteria to enter your skin through.
